Choosing the right awning for your home or garden

Awnings will give you a lot of freedom in making a statement in your garden. The colours and fabrics available will enable you to co-ordinate the style of your awning with your garden furniture, your garden scheme and the exterior of your home. Make sure that the fabric is treated with a UV stabiliser that resists fading, as well as coated with Teflon to make it stain-resistant and has undergone an anti-mildew treatment, to prevent spots appearing.

New technology means that awnings nowadays are fully automatically operated. A wide range of remote control options will ensure optimal enjoyment, so that manually unfurling of the awning is history. There are even light sensors available that will operate the awning for you! Wind sensors are a must as they will keep an eye on the wind speeds and will retract your awning when speeds will make it unsafe to have your awning extended. These additional features can be extremely useful in ensuring that your awning proves to be a long-lasting addition to your home. Although any damage or malfunction may be covered by your home insurance, a good quality awning should be extremely durable and require little maintenance. You can also customise your awning in order to make sure than you get the most from your investment.

To ensure that you have optimal use of your garden, the direction and amount of sun should be determined. These criteria will define the placement and drop of the awning. Also the size of the awning can be optimised.

Not only your standard awning cover will help you get the most out of your outside space, you can also opt for a front valence, a highly decorative and useful addition, which will give you extra shade for when the sun just wants to peep under your awning! For extra privacy and shading side curtains are available.

All the fabric and mechanical choices put aside, the actual skeleton of the awning should always be made of powder coated aluminium and stainless steel. Aluminium is renowned for its lightweight and stainless steel for its strength. Especially brackets and other fixings need to be of stainless steel, as they will secure the awning to the building.
