About this deal

The headband is made of metal with a leather support underneath, which we found very comfortable. The ear cups are leather and breathe relatively well as we never felt steamy even listening on a hot summer day. Connecting the ear cups to the head band are solid metal pieces that feel like they can withstand some serious abuse. It’s also nice to see that there are user accessible screws so parts can be replaced, adding to the longevity of the headphone. Features I decided to dig into the many headphone measurement spreadsheets I've acquired over the last three years since starting InnerFidelity and compare the numerous models tested. A couple of things to note: Some of the traces for early models of the LCD-3 are an average of three or four headphones; the FR traces of these models will be somewhat less noisy in the treble due to the averaging of multiple cans response. Also, please remember that headphone measurements are notoriously difficult, and while I try to be very careful the data is not 100% reliable. So please, don't try to read too much into these data, especially above 5kHz where many factors come into play.

you will experience those out-of-your-head moments when it feels like stuff is happening around you rather than through the headphones. There are over 100 headphones on the market today, and I’m not going to tell you I have listened to all of them, but I have listened to a fair number of top contenders under ideal conditions. Since I am writing this review for The Absolute Sound, I am using only its criteria, which is adherence to the sound of unamplified music, to judge the winners. I guess it could be called the battle of the flagships. Among the legions of headphones currently on the market I could only find four that I would characterize as flagships. They are: the Sennheiser HD 800, the Stax 009, the Audeze LCD-3, and the Audeze LCD-X. Each of these headphones has some flaws, but none of them has what I would consider fatal flaws, like huge variations in frequency response, or high distortion, or limited bandwidth, or odd colorations—anything that obviously distorts the music. Having listened extensively to these four flagships, the headphone that presented music in the most astonishingly accurate way is the Audeze LCD-X. Audeze, as a brand, is renowned for its commitment to delivering high-quality audio experiences, and the X is a prime example of their dedication to excellence in sound reproduction. Planar Magnetic TechnologyMy experience with every other planar magnetic headphone has been that's it's purely resistive (the same impedance and 0º phase angle at every frequency as DC), so I was too lazy to fire up my laboratory to measure its impedance versus frequency. Last but definitely not least – you can choose between leather and leather-free earpads. Mine pair is leather, and I could tell that right away because of…the smell. It is definitely the best smelling pair of headphones in my collection. Of course, it is not as important as many other things when it comes to headphones, but it’s definitely a welcome treat to have. Who doesn’t like the smell of quality leather? Unlike traditional dynamic driver headphones, planar magnetic drivers offer several advantages, one of which is their ability to provide outstanding resolution.

foot (75 inch or 1.9 meter) braided cord with one ¼" plug and two 4-pin female mini XLR connectors. The bulk of my listening was done comparing the current Fazor models agains each other, and compared with LCD-2 and LCD-3 models just prior to the Fazor change. I've mentioned some tid-bits regarding the sound quality above, but I'll reiterate here in more detail.

AUDEZE INSIDER NEWS

Either of these are far beyond any conventional headphone at any price for smoothness and deep bass. While most headphones only need an iPad level control set to 1/2 for movie sound, I usually have it around 3/4 on my iPad with the LCD-X. I never need more gain than I have, so all is good. While the LCD3 is still a great pair of headphones for people that like that warm, dark, and very lush sound signature, the LCD-X is simply better in technical capabilities, and its tuning is more universal and neutral. Of course, the LCD3 is a true craftsmanship gem, feeling more luxurious and definitely more expensive than its younger brother, but it sacrifices those factors for comfort. The suspension strap type of headband found in the LCD-X is much more comfortable and better at weight distribution, giving us a more enjoyable and more comfortable feel. You can’t really go wrong with having both, but if you’d have to choose one, I’d definitely recommend the LCD-X 2021. It is much more universal, has better technicalities, and what’s the most important – it’s way cheaper. Great job Audeze.
